Part 2 of 16Seven Lamps Before the Throne

The Nicene Creed

10:32 Introduction

Four phrases from the Nicene Creed — one baptism, catholic and apostolic, proceeding from the Father, and born of the Father — examined against Scripture.

About this episode

Part Two examines four doctrinal phrases from the Nicene Creed that deserve special attention: one baptism, catholic and apostolic, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, and born of the Father.

The episode distinguishes water baptism from the baptism of the Holy Spirit — salvation is not accomplished by outward ritual alone but by the supernatural miracle of spiritual rebirth. It explains Yona Tree’s non-denominational position while affirming faith in the one, holy, universal Church passed down through the teachings of Christ’s Apostles.

It then turns to the Holy Spirit as the giver of life, proceeding from the Father and through the Son (John 5:25–26), and compares the creed’s “born of the Father” with the Athanasian Creed’s “begotten of the Father.” Through the Greek word gennao, the episode explores the biblical distinction between begetting and birthing, and asks the question at the center of the series: was the Son begotten of the Father and born of the Holy Spirit before all ages?
